Work with the Ngobe Indigenous community in The Islands of Bocas del Toro
Give & Surf is a 501(c)(3) volunteer based non-profit with the mission to empower Bahia Honda through community and educational development. We serve an indigenous community of Ngobe Indians through a preschool, after-school program, adult english classes, sports programs, and various construction projects. We operate 365 days a year and host volunteers year round.
Volunteers currently participate in the following programs during their time with us; Monso Chi Escuelita a preschool for the indigenous children three days a week (approx 20 children 3-5 yrs old), an after school program for the elementary school children two days a week(focused on their studies, english, and activities), adult english classes two days a week, weekly baseball practice, and possible construction projects. Past construction projects have included a playground, water tank installations, and dining hall/kitchen for the school. Learn more about these programs by visiting http://giveandsurf.org/give-programs/.The indigenous people we serve live in the mangrove forests in thatched huts, survive off subsistence living, and travel around the bay in dugout canoes. Bahia Honda is a small and intimate community of 200 Ngobe Indians who live primitive and simple lives. The nice thing for volunteers is the community exists only twenty minutes from town where you can find a number of great restaurants, shops, and things to do. Volunteer accommodations depend on the length of stay. For volunteers of a month or more your stay is at our volunteer house in Bahia Honda. It is a wonderful house on its own island tucked away in the bay. We accommodate five volunteers here at a time. For volunteers coming to stay less than a month you would be housed at our friends tent lodge, palmartentlodge.com, on the beach of Red Frog. This is also close to the community you will volunteer in and off the beaten tourist path of Bocas del Toro. Volunteer life in Bocas del Toro is over the water as there are no roads and all transportation is done by boat.
This is a great experience if you want to volunteer in a primitive community located in a very unique island archipelago and also partake in adventurous and relaxing activities during your free time. Visit, http://giveandsurf.org/join-the-crew/, to learn more about your travel options and what is included in your stay. There are so many amazing and adventurous activities for volunteers to do and we accommodate volunteers by providing transportation to all the wondering places to see. From hiking through the jungle to taking daily excursion to deserted islands and beaches, Bocas del Toro is full of adventure. Of course learning how to surf is provided daily and part of the volunteer fees.
