We are writing about a fantastic opportunity to work with the Bedouin population in central Israel. The Alkhaimah Association for Education and Development, a registered non-profit for community development and women’s empowerment, is seeking volunteers to tutor English or work with youth in one of our after school programs.
Alkhaimah is committed to encouraging children, particularly girls, in the Bedouin community to actively participate in our Learning Center, due to the belief in promoting women as agents of change. Pupils attend the center two hours per day (after school) from Sunday to Thursday where they receive help with their daily homework and participate in workshops, some with the goal of strengthening the children’s inter-personal communication skills and self-confidence.
Volunteers will assist with workshops focusing on: Communication, Self-Confidence and Personality Development, Girls’ Rights, Physical Development, Sexual Harassment and Reproductive Rights. Other on-going activities include sports as well as English/Arabic/Hebrew Classes.
Ideal candidates would have a genuine interest and enthusiasm in women’s rights and could assist the teachers and even develop their own workshops and lesson plans. Volunteers must be over the age of 18, have a high school education, speak English (Arabic is an advantage but not a requirement), and be able to commit to the project for a minimum of 8 weeks. Experience working with children is encouraged as is a willingness to adapt to work and life in a very different culture.
The organization will help arrange a Bedouin home stay for participants seeking accommodation, providing a great opportunity to work on Arabic or Hebrew language skills and learn more about this unique and underrepresented population in Israel.
Volunteers are expected to pay transportation and living costs while in Israel.
